The variety of international organizations represented at HMC Middle East allows delegates to take on the role and perspective of different nations. Even though this is Harvard Model Congress we recognize the impact international organizations have in our globalized world.  From the Arab League to the United Nations Security Council, delegates will draft legislation to present to the International Summit, where the nations of the world come together to address these critical issues.  

AFRICAN UNION

The African Union is a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. The objectives of the African Union include achieving greater unity, cohesion and solidarity between the African countries and African nations, defending the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of its Member States, accelerating the political and social-economic integration of the continent, and promoting African common positions on issues of interest to the continent and its peoples.

UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal councils of the United Nations (UN) and is charged with ensuring international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is concerned with international public health. The WHO's mandate seeks and includes: working worldwide to promote health, keeping the world safe, and serve the vulnerable. It advocates that a billion more people should have: universal health care coverage, engagement with the monitoring of public health risks, coordinating responses to health emergencies, and promoting health and well-being. It provides technical assistance to countries, sets international health standards, and collects data on global health issues. The WHO also serves as a forum for discussions of health issues.

ARAB LEAGUE*

This committee will be a women-only committee for delegates who feel more comfortable in that setting. The Arab League is a regional organization in the Arab world. The League's main goal is to bring member states closer, coordinate collaboration between them and to safeguard their independence and sovereignty. The League facilitates political, economic, cultural, scientific, and social programmes designed to promote the interests of the Arab world.

GROUP OF 20

The G-20 is a group formed by nineteen countries with the largest economies plus the European Union that provides a forum for dialogue in order to promote meaningful and effective economic development. It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

THE WORLD BANK

The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans and grants to the governments of low- and middle-income countries for the purpose of pursuing capital projects. For the last 30 years, it has included NGOs and environmental groups in its loan portfolio. Its loan strategy is influenced by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, as well as environmental and social safeguards.
